From Civilization to Stellaris, to Endless Legend and Age of Wonders, I've played most of the big names and had a lot of fun doing so. There is, however, a problem common to almost every 4X game I've played, some to a greater extent than others, but it's almost always there in some form.

<![CDATA[Can We Please Give Rayman His Own Game Again?]]> There's something oddly depressing about the recent trailer for Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope DLC 3, where Rayman's return to gaming was finally shown off. Not only is it does it annoy me that the character is finally coming back in a game not at all related to his home genre (platforming), but it's just sad given the context. The poor guy's been reduced to a cameo in his own franchise—with the rabbids originally being characters in a Rayman spin-off. Despite the limbless hero being a platforming star since his 1995 debut, he hasn't had a game (not counting a couple middling mobile titles) since the excellent Rayman Legends—which was ten years ago.

<![CDATA[Starfield Probably Won't Have A Demo, And That's OK]]> In case you haven't been on social media in the past couple days, let me be the first to inform you that we're officially less than a month away from the launch of Starfield. I knew this already, of course, thanks to the handy-dandy release date guide we keep pinned to our front page here at DualShockers. But if you're like me, and you can't tear yourself away from social media FOMO, then this news is no surprise to you, because like me, you've been hit with an absolute deluge of similarly slapped-together one-month-out posts and tweets.

<![CDATA[The Fuss Over The Term 'JRPG' Says A Lot About The State Of The Genre]]> Man, I haven't seen the Internet question itself about the use of a certain word since the "one-eyed monster" thing in Xenoblade 2, but yeah, the misuse of the term "JRPG" has gotten out of hand lately. I understand where Yoshi-P—the one who started the discussion in his interview with Skill Up—is coming from. JRPG has been and still is a discriminatory term on Internet forums, and I've seen it thrown around derogatorily many times to refer to those 'quirky weird alien games that aren't Diablo or Baldur's Gate' .... and that's putting it mildly.

<![CDATA[Naruto Connections Looks Like It's (Almost) Worth Playing]]> 2023 continues to be packed with hype surrounding lots of great fighting game announcements, but not all announcements are made equal, as some have missed the mark in drumming up excitement. This was the story for Naruto x Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections, and while that has started to change for the better, the game doesn't seem to be quite there on delivering something that many players will want to dive into.

<![CDATA[Baldur's Gate 3's Simultaneous Turns Are The Right Kind Of Chaos]]> I’ve got a lot of love for Larian’s past work, but my gods did some of those fights in Divinity: Original Sin 2 drag on. 10 minutes fighting some puny void slugs early in the game was just a taste of things to come, with later battles later in the game taking up whole evenings—literal hours of game time. Don’t get me wrong, Original Sin 2 has a wonderfully reactive, deep, and creative combat system, but even that was starting to bow under the weight of sheer pacing-drain. The problem would only get amplified when playing with two or more people, when you could be waiting a good 10 minutes for your turn.

However, that hasn't stopped me from gushing about "The Glory" to our editor Matthew Schomer every time we bump into each other. Fortunately, today I finally have the opportunity to indulge in my side hobby with "Love Too Easily," an interactive visual novel that embodies the essence of a Korean drama, complete with real-life actors, branching choices, and even hidden endings.

<![CDATA[Final Fantasy 16 is Proof There’s No Satisfying the Entire Fanbase]]> Final Fantasy has been growing and evolving continuously for 35 years. The very first sequel, Hironobu Sakaguchi's Final Fantasy 2, was designed to be transformative rather than just iterative, and every major Final Fantasy installment since then has pushed boundaries fearlessly, which has been a driving force behind the series. Each game had its own unique vision in terms of visuals, gameplay, storyline, and musical score, even though there were obvious similarities between them.

But if there’s one thing I learned from the latest entry in the Final Fantasy series, it’s that playing it safe is a viable gameplay style. Not every gamer, including myself, relishes in the thought of painstaking boss battles after a hard day's work, even if it produces a sense of accomplishment—a validation I can live without.

<![CDATA[Being Able To Bang Every Companion In Baldur's Gate 3 Is A Bit Silly]]> Baldur’s Gate 3 is fantastic from what I’ve played so far—on course to become one of the greatest RPGs I’ve ever played, in fact. Its evident love of the Forgotten Realms universe, its clever implementation of D&D 5e into a videogame format, its character writing, are all fantastic. But in a game of such breathtaking scope, there are bound to be some little slip-ups here and there, and one of these for me is in the ‘playersexuality’ of the companions.

The games tell you that each region has it’s own script and writing system, yet present all of them as English or slightly different accents of English. Telling me your game includes multiple languages and writing systems loses its purpose if I cannot fully engage with them, since i'm not really learning anything new beyond my own native bubble (I'm not an English native, but you get the picture).

<![CDATA[Wow, Blasphemous Really Had Some Of The Best Bosses In Gaming]]> In preparation for Blasphemous 2, I decided to do a deep-dive into the utterly bonkers and arcane lore of the original Blasphemous to remind myself (and, well, figure out for the first time) what the hell it was all about. On this research odyssey, which culminated in me writing a Blasphemous story explainer that took way longer than I thought it would, I watched back some of the great boss fights of the game, and it really reminded me just how impressive, horrifying, and outright brilliant some of these battles were.

<![CDATA[Yoshi-P Seems Surprised That People Want Final Fantasy 16 DLC. But even with all the reveals and fanfare, and the still image of director/producer Naoki Yoshida (more commonly known as Yoshi-P) sleeping in his office that just wouldn't stop popping up on my Twitter feed no matter how many times I'd seen it, there's one thing Yoshida said a couple of weeks ago that's still bugging me.

<![CDATA[Persona Could Learn A Lot About Player Choice From Shin Megami Tensei]]> I've always had a nagging feeling about Persona games. Sure, they promote living life to the fullest and being true to oneself, yet they limit the player to numerous scripted events with shallow choices and predictable outcomes. What I would really like to see in Persona 6, or any future Persona title, is a more consequential narrative. It's not like Persona needs to look far for inspo, because its own parent series, Shin Megami Tensei, handles player choice and agency brilliantly.

From Ornstein and Smough to Mother Brain to Sephiroth, they're a video game mainstay for a good reason. Starfield, Spider-Man 2, Star Wars Outlaws, Fable, and many more have all been unveiled or have been given new trailers. All these games look to be sporting the expected bells and whistles of an upcoming AAA release, specifically graphics that border on photorealism. I recognize being habitually stuck in the previous console generations makes me a little behind on these things, but I was blown away at the trailers for games like Star Wars Outlaws, with real-time gameplay that looks better than the cinematics that were coming out a year or so back.

Game Pass has that exact issue, with rows on top of rows of titles to choose from. It's a great issue to have, don't get me wrong, but when trying something new, I often worry I'll bet on the wrong horse and snag a game that drags on too long in the beginning. This happened to me recently with Minecraft Legends, where long cutscenes and a drawn-out tutorial phase killed my investment in the game. It probably would've picked up eventually, given the good things I've heard about it, but with such a library of games to peruse, it did nothing to grab me and make me feel like I wasn't wasting my time.

Back then, I believed it marked the end of an era of forced adaptations that followed the well-known patterns about one of the most popular superheroes ever, who had already starred in eight movies and countless games. This year, with the arrival of Across the Spider-Verse, that feeling was reinforced, as it proved once again that captivating stories and characters could successfully break away from their past iterations.

It started with Xenosaga back when I was an undergrad and continues to this day with the most recent DLC for Xenoblade 3, Future Redeemed. There’s a complexity to this metaseries’ narrative that has yet to capture me the same way. Black-and-white scenes symbolizing historical events, and color scenes representing subjective perspectives; the plot is as haphazard and incomprehensible as you would expect from Nolan, but I would argue that 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is no less bonkers in these departments.

The rarity of that grand RPG experience is part of what makes it special. Tears of the Kingdom may have a lot in common with its predecessor, but beating it as fast as possible is anything but a familiar experience. <![CDATA[Why Starscourge Radahn Is Among The Best Boss Battles In Gaming]]> I still get tingles thinking about it: that charge across the rust-coloured Wailing Dunes, the somber militaristic opening notes of the boss theme, the distant silhouette of the massive armour containing the Scarlet-rotted husk of the demigod Radahn—once a formidable and well-respected general, now a monster riding a painfully emaciated steed kept alive by unnatural magical means.

<![CDATA[I Really Dig Metaphor: ReFantazio's Realistic Take On Fantasy]]> In many games and stories, fantasy refers to worlds far removed from our modern architecture and noisy streets. And to truly appreciate fantasy adventures, you must immerse yourself in their make-believe, and ignore the fact that they are not real. But is that enough in this day and age, when so many other genres are dealing with more social and real issues that can actually be inspiring? It may be presumptuous to say, but maybe the fantasy genre needs to step up its game.

You still get introduced to the mysterious species, Pikmin, who are all too eager to help you in your time of need.

I'm not talking about literally using it for its designated purpose (creating light), nor am I talking about clonking people on the head with the butt of one, but using the flashlight's very beam to defeat (usually supernatural) enemies.

Not only is it a tightly-written piece with fresh interpretations of classic characters, but it's one of the best-looking films out there. As an animation nerd, seeing this blend of art directions (mixing 2D, CGI, and live-action elements with a smorgasbord of different pallettes and styles) feels as seminal to me as Who Framed Roger Rabbit? It's genuinely groundbreaking.

Sega Genesis and SNES will be rubbing shoulders with MC Hammer, Michael Jordan, and Seinfeld. Mid-late 90s, you’ll have the PS1 and the N64’s trident controller up there with AOL, Spice Girls, The Matrix, and frosted tips (and let’s be honest, those consoles were better than at least two of those other things).

That's given Smash Bros fans hope that, at long last, one of their most requested characters may finally make an appearance in Nintendo's brawler.

<![CDATA[2023 Is The Best Year For Horror Games In A Very Long Time]]> About every month this year, a big game has completely dominated all conversation. In an interesting yet not unexpected twist, two of those games were remakes of the already beloved Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space. Both remakes got the spotlight due to blowing expectations out of the water, with changes feeling necessary while still keeping the original tones intact. With just these two, I feel it's easy to come to one conclusion: It's been an excellent year, for fans of RE4 and Dead Space.

<![CDATA[Starfield's AMD 'Exclusivity' Would Be A Disaster For The Game]]> If you’re the kind of person who takes joy in pointing at the people who don’t have a thing that you have, then maybe it’s time to reevaluate your life. I do have some faith in humanity still, however, so I like to think that not many people are actually like that, and that concepts like ‘platform exclusivity’ aren’t particularly welcomed by anyone other than the business-heads for whom the term is synonymous with profit.

<![CDATA[Diablo 4's Horses Aren't Exactly Thoroughbreds ]]> I've never been on a real horse, but I must have ridden dozens, if not hundreds of virtual steeds. From Shadow of the Colossus to Oblivion to The Witcher 3, I've had many worthy equine comrades. Horses in video games have always had my back, and I, and many other gamers, have many fond memories of them. I think some of us have even gotten over the Oblivion horse armour debacle.

<![CDATA[Final Fantasy 16's Active Time Lore Should Be In All Future FF Games]]> I really enjoyed playing Final Fantasy 12 when it rereleased on the PS4 several years ago. Compared to my first experience from its original run, during which I felt that it was the worst entry in the series, coming back to it felt like a big improvement. In replaying the game, I realized that the story was far more mature and complex than I originally thought.

<![CDATA[Why I'm Hyped For Starfield's Mostly Uninhabited Galaxy]]> I've been following progress on Starfield for a while, and I'm sure many of you can say the same. It's Bethesda's chance to strut the Microsoft money and a new IP after decades of Elder Scrolls and Fallout, while still keeping those hallmarks that we love about Elder Scrolls and their take on Fallout. Recently, we've hearrd that about 90% of Starfield's planets being devoid of life. This left some people concerned, while others deem this perfectly normal for a spacefaring game.

<![CDATA[Are Final Fantasy 16's Highs Enough To Justify The Lows?]]> Watching the reception to Final Fantasy 16 unfold in real-time is intriguing, to say the least. If I were to quantify it, I'd say that about 10% of fans are currently dissatisfied with the game's new action garb and minimalistic RPG quirks, while the remaining 90% are consistently blown away by every single aspect, including the much-debated side quests.

<![CDATA[A Black Flag Remake Shouldn't Be An Assassin's Creed Game]]> It looks like the penny’s finally dropped at Ubisoft (or, at least, now we know it’s dropped). With its ship-fighting game Skull and Bones seemingly struggling to stay afloat and sinking in development hell, Ubisoft sources have told Kotaku that a remake of the pirate game we actually want, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, is indeed in development.
