Highlights

  • Every companion in Baldur's Gate 3 can be romanced, allowing players to forge genuine relationships that impact their decisions in the game.
  • There was confusion about NPCs being able to engage in romance separately from the player character, but this has been clarified in an updated post.
  • Players can romance NPCs who are also playing as Origins, but NPCs cannot romance other NPCs, and players cannot romance other players.

After a contradictory statement was included in Baldur’s Gate 3’s newest community post, Larian has updated the newsletter to clarify who exactly can romance who in the upcoming RPG.

A section of Larian’s newest community update deals with romance and companionship. It’s been confirmed previously that every companion you encounter in the game can be romanced in some shape or form.

Larian put this rather diplomatically, saying “While you adventure, you forge genuine ‘human’ relationships with those you venture with. These can flourish into relationships that add gravity to every decision you make in the game, and you’re free to pursue them through deliberation, choice, and consequences. However, you’re also able to back out of them at any moment, change your mind, or fall in love with someone else.”

However, there was some confusion about the prospect of two NPC companions engaging in romance separate from the player character. Originally spotted by PCGN, Larian’s post first read “Origin characters can romance other Origins so long as they’re not the primary character controlled by the player,” which seems to suggest that romance can happen independently of the player.

However, this is not the case and the post has been updated to reflect that. It now reads,

  • A played Origin can romance an NPC Origin.
  • An NPC Origin cannot romance an NPC Origin.
  • Played Origins cannot romance other player Origins.

For those unfamiliar, ‘Origin’ is the term used for Baldur’s Gate 3's companions as they can also take the role of protagonist if the player wishes, much like Divinity: Original Sin 2. So, while you’ll be able to romance other Origins if you’re playing as an Origin, your beloved comrades won’t be having sex independently of you. Praise Sune.

Also, you won’t be able to romance other players but is there any deeper bond between people than the one formed through playing Baldur’s Gate 3 together? That’s probably a 150-hour commitment at least. That’s a year’s worth of dates, folks.

Baldur’s Gate 3 releases on August 3 on PC. The PlayStation 5 version is coming September 6, while the Xbox Series X/S version doesn’t have a release date yet.
